Late Filing Penalties
Last updated: Jan 25, 2026
The deadline for filing your tax return is May 2 each year. If you miss the deadline, you will have to pay a late filing fee.
Mark your calendar
May 2 is the standard deadline for submitting your tax return in Sweden. Filing late results in penalties that increase over time.
Late Filing Fees
The late filing fees increase the longer you wait to file:
1
Filing after May 2, 2025
Penalty of SEK 1,250
2
Filing three months late
Additional SEK 1,250 (total: SEK 2,500)
3
Filing five months late
Another SEK 1,250 (total: SEK 3,750)
Maximum Late Filing Fee: SEK 3,750
The maximum late filing fee is SEK 3,750 if you file five months late. After that, additional penalties or legal action may be taken by Skatteverket.
What If You Need More Time?
If you need more time to file your tax return, you can request an extension through Skatteverket's "Mina sidor" portal.
Extension benefit
This will allow you to file your tax return by May 16 instead of May 2. Make sure to submit your extension request by May 2, without having to pay any late filing fee.
Additional benefits of requesting an extension:
- You have more time to use Skatteguru before the deadline
- You avoid slow response times from Skatteverket when everyone else is trying to file their tax return at the same time
