    Tax Filing FAQ

    Last updated: Jan 25, 2026

Find answers to common questions about filing your tax return in Sweden, including reporting requirements, deadlines, and special considerations for stock options and investments.

    General Tax Filing

Who needs to file a tax return in Sweden?

Residents of Sweden and non-residents with financial ties (e.g., property, family, or business) must file a tax return. Pre-printed tax returns must be submitted even if no changes are needed.

What is the deadline for filing my tax return?

The deadline is May 2 each year. Filing late may result in penalties.

How do I know if I need to file a K4 form?

If you sold shares, transferred shares to an ISK, or incurred capital gains/losses, you must file a K4 form.

What happens if I miss the filing deadline?

Late filing fees start at SEK 1,250 and can reach a maximum of SEK 3,750 if delayed by five months. Interest on unpaid taxes also applies.

    Income Reporting

How is employment income reported on the tax return?

Employment income, including taxable benefits such as stock option gains or RSU vesting, is reported under Box 1.1 of the tax return.

How do I report stock option benefits on my tax return?

The taxable benefit (market price at exercise minus strike price) is included as employment income. The acquisition cost for capital gains is based on the market price at exercise.

What is the process for reporting RSUs (Restricted Stock Units)?

The full market value of vested RSUs is taxed as employment income. After net settlement, the remaining shares' value becomes the acquisition cost for capital gains reporting.

    Investments and Capital Gains

How do I calculate the acquisition cost for my shares?

Use the fair market value at the time of exercise (for stock options) or vesting (for RSUs). Include brokerage fees and use Skatteverket's average cost basis tool for multiple transactions.

How are capital gains and losses from share sales taxed in Sweden?

Gains from listed shares are taxed at 30%, while unlisted shares are taxed at 25%. Losses can offset gains or reduce taxes at rates of 30% (up to SEK 100,000) and 21% above that.

What is the tax rate for gains on listed vs. unlisted shares?

Listed shares are taxed at 30%, and unlisted shares are taxed at 25%.

    Exchange Rates

What exchange rate should I use to convert foreign income to SEK?

Use the exchange rate on the transaction date (available from the Swedish Riksbank). For proceeds received within 30 days, use the actual exchange rate at the time of receipt.

How do I report exchange rate gains or losses from share sales?

Report gains or losses due to exchange rate changes in Section C of the K4 form.

    Double Taxation

What can I do if I am taxed in multiple countries on the same income?

You can claim a tax credit for foreign taxes paid or apply for a tax exemption under double taxation agreements.

How do I claim a tax credit or exemption for foreign taxes paid?

Include details of foreign taxes paid in your tax return and submit any supporting documents. The credit or exemption will reduce your Swedish tax liability.

    Filing Process

How can I file my tax return electronically in Sweden?

Use Skatteverket's e-service, "Inkomstdeklaration 1," to file your tax return and attach forms like the K4 for share sales.

How do I include additional forms, such as the K4, in my tax return?

Log in to Skatteverket's e-service, select "Bilagor," and upload the K4 form with the required details.

How can I register or update my bank account for tax refunds?

Log in to Skatteverket's e-service and provide your bank account details to receive any tax refunds.

    Tax Adjustments

Can I amend my tax return after filing?

Yes, you can request a reassessment for up to six years after filing. Submit a written request with supporting documents to Skatteverket.
