Currency Conversion Rules for Stock Sales
Last updated: Apr 25, 2026
Learn how Skatteguru handles currency conversions for stock sales in your Swedish tax declaration, including how we use Riksbanken exchange rates and handle non-bank days.
When you sell stocks in a foreign currency (like USD), Skatteguru uses Riksbanken's official exchange rates to convert the amounts to SEK for your tax declaration. Here's how we handle different scenarios to ensure compliance with Skatteverkets guidelines for currency conversions
Basic Rules for Currency Conversion
- For regular trading days, we use the exchange rate on the transaction date.
- For trades on non-bank days (weekends and holidays), we use the last published exchange rate prior to the transaction date. This is the default setting, for conservative reasons.
Overriding the Default Exchange Rate
According to Skatteverket's 30-dagarsregeln, if you receive payment in SEK within 30 days of a USD-denominated sale, Swedish tax law requires you to use the actual exchange rate from the date you received the funds—rather than the rate on the transaction date.
You can override the default exchange rate directly in the Skatteguru interface by editing individual trade events on the file details page. Simply navigate to a file, find the event you want to modify, and click the "Set Override" button in the Exchange Rate Override section.
When you set an override, you can optionally add notes explaining why you changed the exchange rate. This is useful for your own records and for documentation purposes.
Visual Indicator for Edited Events
Stock events with overridden exchange rates (or edited execution times) are highlighted with special symbols in the trade journal.
